General Questions

Who we are, where we work, and what we do.

The Window & Door Company serves Hatteras Island and Ocracoke, including Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco, Hatteras, and Ocracoke. Ocracoke projects may require additional travel and coordination depending on project scope, scheduling, materials, and logistics.

We specialize in coastal exterior renovation and repair for aging homes, rental properties, second homes, primary residences, and new construction. Services include windows, doors, roofing, siding, decks and railings, glass panel railings, exterior trim, flashing and water-management details, impact-rated product options, insurance repair support, builder and architect support, and complete exterior renovations. We also handle related interior repairs when exterior damage, leaks, or water intrusion have affected the inside of the home.

No. While windows and doors are a major part of our expertise, our OBX focus is broader — we help protect and renovate the exterior systems of coastal homes. Many coastal problems are connected: a leaking window may involve siding, trim, flashing, drywall, or framing. Our goal is to look at the full scope of work and create the right repair or renovation plan.

Yes. A large part of our work focuses on aging coastal homes on Hatteras Island and Ocracoke exposed to decades of salt air, wind, sun, humidity, storms, and rental use. We evaluate worn or failing windows, doors, roofing, siding, decks, railings, trim, flashing, and related damage so the home can be properly repaired, updated, and protected.

Yes. We provide product and installation support for new construction, remodels, additions, and builder-led projects — window and door packages, siding, roofing coordination, decks, railings, multi-panel glass door systems, product documentation, and coastal exterior details.

Homes on Hatteras Island and Ocracoke face conditions that are much harder on exterior
materials than many inland homes. Wind, salt air, humidity, sun exposure, storms, wind-driven
rain, corrosion, and moisture can all affect how products perform over time.
That is why product selection, installation details, flashing, fasteners, hardware, trim, and water
management are so important.

Yes. Impact-rated products may be appropriate depending on location, opening type, project scope, and local requirements. We work with homeowners, builders, architects, and remodelers to review options. Final code requirements, permit approvals, inspections, and product compliance decisions are determined by the appropriate authorities, code officials, engineers, manufacturers, or design professionals.

No. Terms like impact-rated, wind-rated, storm-rated, or coastal-rated refer to product testing and manufacturer specifications. No product or installation can guarantee protection from all storm damage, water intrusion, wind, flooding, corrosion, or future failure under all conditions.

Andersen, Pella, ProVia, James Hardie, GAF Roofing, TimberTech, Deckorators, LP SmartSide, and other trusted siding options where appropriate. We compare products based on the home, exposure, budget, appearance, maintenance needs, and long-term goals.

We are certified, authorized, approved, trained, or otherwise recognized as contractors, dealers, or installers for certain manufacturers and product lines. That means homeowners work with professionals who understand manufacturer-recommended installation methods. However, we are not the manufacturer — product warranties and warranty decisions remain the responsibility of the applicable manufacturer.

Windows & Doors

We do both. We replace windows in existing and aging homes, and we provide window products and complete installation support for builders, architects, remodelers, and new construction.

Yes. In many coastal homes, full-frame replacement is the better approach when there is water intrusion, rotted trim, failed flashing, soft framing, or damage around the opening. It lets us evaluate and address more of the opening instead of simply covering the existing condition.

Yes. We enlarge existing openings, create new openings, convert windows into doors, install larger patio door systems, and prepare openings for multi-panel glass doors. This includes header and beam installation, framing modifications, load-path coordination, engineer coordination when required, and integration with siding, trim, flashing, and water-management details.

Yes. We provide entry doors, patio doors, sliding glass doors, hinged patio doors, French doors,
storm doors, and related door systems for replacement, renovation, and new construction
projects.

Yes. We provide and install multi-panel, large-opening, folding, and stacking glass door systems — popular for connecting indoor spaces with decks, porches, and ocean or sound views. They require careful planning, structural coordination, sill details, flashing, and water management.

Garage doors are not our primary focus, but when one is part of a larger renovation or new construction project, we can coordinate the right product, installation, and trade partners.

Roofing, Siding, Decks & Railings

Yes — roof replacement, GAF roofing options, asphalt and architectural shingles, metal roofing options, low-slope coordination, flashing details, and roof-to-wall transition planning for existing homes, renovations, and new construction.

Yes — fiber cement (James Hardie), vinyl, natural wood, engineered wood such as LP SmartSide, and metal siding where appropriate, for replacement, remodels, and new construction.

Yes. We install James Hardie siding and can compare product options, profiles, trim details, colors, and installation considerations. Hardie is a featured premium option, but we evaluate other siding products based on the home, exposure, style, budget, and maintenance goals.

Yes — deck replacement, repairs, stairs, landings, railings, composite and PVC decking, pressure-treated and hardwood decking, TimberTech, Deckorators, and outdoor living upgrades.

Yes. Many homes in this region are built on pilings. Deck and exterior renovations often involve working around existing pilings, new pilings, elevated framing, stairs, landings, and structural connections. We coordinate these conditions and involve engineers or trade partners when needed.

Yes. Glass panel railings can be a great option for homes with ocean, sound, canal, or marsh views where preserving visibility matters. They require careful product selection, framing support, hardware, and wind-load considerations — especially in coastal environments.

Insurance Repair Support

Yes. We provide insurance repair support for storm, water, wind, leak-related, exterior, and related interior damage. We review visible damage, prepare repair scopes, provide estimates, document conditions, coordinate approved repairs, and complete the work we are contracted to perform.

No. We are not a public adjuster, insurance company, agent, attorney, or policy advisor. We do not interpret policies, determine coverage, negotiate settlements, or represent homeowners in disputes. Our role is limited to reviewing physical conditions, discussing repair needs, preparing scopes and estimates, documenting conditions, and completing contracted repairs.

Yes. A roof leak may damage ceilings or drywall; a failed window or door may damage trim, framing, flooring, or interior finishes; failed siding or flashing may allow water behind the wall system. When related interior damage is part of the scope, we can include that work in the review, estimate, and approved repair process.

Estimates, Scheduling & Process

Reach out through our website contact form, by phone at 919-263-1953, or by email at info@thewindowanddoorco.com. Please include your property location, project type, photos if available, and a brief description of what you need.

Some projects can be reviewed and estimated at no cost. Larger, more complex, design-heavy, insurance-related, structural, or multi-scope projects may require a consultation, site review, design, or estimating fee. If a fee applies, we explain it before moving forward.

Property address or town, type of property, project type, photos of affected areas, known leaks/damage/concerns, whether it's replacement, renovation, new construction, structural alteration, or insurance-related, an approximate timeline, and any plans, drawings, inspection reports, or insurance documents you have. The more upfront, the better we can determine the next step.

Permit requirements vary by project scope, location, product type, structural changes, and local rules. When permits are needed, we can coordinate permit-related information, product documentation, engineering info, and project details. Final permit and inspection approval and code interpretation are determined by the appropriate local authorities.

No. We do not currently offer in-house or third-party contractor financing. Many contractor financing programs come with higher rates, fees, or terms that aren't always in the homeowner's best long-term interest. For larger projects, we recommend reviewing options through your own bank, mortgage company, credit union, or home equity lender — often better rates, clearer terms, and more control. We're happy to provide a written estimate you can use in those conversations.

Scheduling depends on scope, product lead times, material availability, travel logistics, permitting, engineering needs, weather, trade coordination, and current workload. Once we understand the project, we can share better timing.
