Pella Materials Guide

Pella Coastal Window and Door Materials

Materials selected for Hatteras Island and Ocracoke

Salt air, humidity, intense sunlight, wind-driven rain, blowing sand and severe coastal storms all affect how a window or door performs over time. We install Pella products built with materials and construction options made for that reality.

Not every Pella product includes every feature. We help homeowners select the appropriate materials and product configuration based on the home’s location, exposure, opening size, appearance and performance requirements.

Impact-resistant glass

Impervia® fiberglass

Aluminum-clad wood

EnduraClad® exteriors

Seacoast EnduraClad®

Corrosion-resistant hardware

Energy-efficient glass

Core Coastal Products

Built for salt air, wind-driven rain and windborne debris

Impact-Resistant Glass

Laminated construction with a protective interlayer that helps hold broken glass together, making an opening far harder to breach during a storm.

Hurricane Shield Series™

Impact glass paired with reinforced frame construction, engineered and tested for severe coastal weather — including High Velocity Hurricane Zone requirements on qualifying configurations.

Impervia® Fiberglass

Pella’s proprietary fiberglass will not rot like exposed wood and will not corrode like metal — a strong, rigid, low-maintenance frame built for salt air.

Impact-resistant glass is only one component of an impact-rated window or door. The glass, frame, sash, hardware, structural reinforcement, anchoring and installation must function together as a complete approved system.

Cladding & Finishes

Compare exterior protection

Wood Interior · Clad Exterior

Aluminum-Clad Wood

Finished wood interiors with EnduraClad® aluminum cladding outside — the warmth of real wood indoors with far less exterior upkeep. Used on Pella Reserve™ and Pella Lifestyle Series.

Heavy Salt Exposure

Seacoast EnduraClad®

Standard exterior finishes can deteriorate faster under heavy salt spray. On selected Pella wood products, the Seacoast EnduraClad protective finish adds extra protection for the clad exterior.

Corrosion-Resistant Hardware

Stainless-steel protection where salt attacks first

Salt air affects exposed metal components even when the frame itself is fiberglass, vinyl or clad wood. Where available, we recommend corrosion-resistant or stainless-steel hardware and compatible exterior fasteners for coastal applications. Availability varies by product and configuration and should never be assumed without reviewing the specifications.

Window operators

Cranks seize as salt deposits build in the gearing

Corrosion-resistant / stainless operator

Hinges

Surface pitting and binding on sash movement

Stainless-steel hinge hardware

Locks & keepers

Stiff or failed engagement of the lock

Coastal-rated locks and keepers

Patio-door rollers & tracks

Rough travel and track corrosion

Stainless rollers, cleaned tracks

Handles

Finish degradation from salt and hand contact

Coastal-rated finish options

Multipoint locking systems

Corrosion-resistant multipoint system

Exterior screws & fasteners

Rust streaking on cladding and trim

Compatible stainless fasteners

Screen components

Frame and mesh degradation

Coastal-appropriate screen hardware

Door thresholds

Routine cleaning still matters. Remove salt deposits from frames, glass, tracks, hinges and operating hardware before buildup affects appearance or operation.

Energy-Efficient Glass

Glass chosen opening by opening

A large west-facing window needs a different glass package than a shaded window under a porch. We evaluate the location and exposure of each opening rather than automatically specifying the same glass throughout the home.

Solar Heat Gain

Reduce the heat a large, sun-facing opening pushes into the room.

Ultraviolet Fading

Help protect floors, rugs and furnishings from bleaching.

Interior Glare

Soften harsh reflected light off water and sand.

Heat Transfer

Improve comfort near glass in both summer and winter.

Outside Noise

Laminated packages quiet wind, surf and road noise.

Energy Loss

Lower the cooling load driven by big coastal glass.
